not going to label myself punk, not gonna label myself queer, not even gonna label myself a feminist. because that’s what everyone does — label shit. labels are for judgement calls and brief assessments of what you’re really all about. fuck those labels. i’m who i am without the labels. equal as you are to me and without the fucking typecast.

carlos batts was one of the first people who welcomed and advised me when i first started photographing performers in the adult industry. he gave great inspiration simply by how much he constantly surprised me with his talent…
his passing is incredibly tragic and unexpected. our whole community is in shock… my heart deeply goes out to his wife and incredible muse, april flores. the creative chemistry they had with one another surpassed all. the warmth they shared — you felt it with every smile and hug that they would greet you with. i always looked forward to seeing them together…
together they created so much. he had so many creative works he hadn’t ever shared with the internet, as he didn’t feel that the work could truly be seen the way it was meant to on the web. he was right. so in turn, i was able to exhibit him in the very first art show i’d ever curated. it was a pleasure and, as the owner of the gallery said, one of the best shows the venue had ever experienced.
he was a dear friend, a great mentor, an amazing inspiration. and with all great artists, his work will still be here to inspire so many more. so thank you, carlos. thank you so much. rest in peace.
